Peter Serkin

Recognized as an artist of passion and integrity, thedistinguished American pianist Peter Serkin has successfully conveyed theessence of five centuries of repertoire. His inspired performances with symphonyorchestras, in recital appearances, chamber music collaborations and onrecordings are equally valued worldwide.

Peter Serkin's rich musical heritage extends backseveral generations: his grandfather was violinist and composer Adolf Busch andhis father pianist Rudolf Serkin. He has performed with the world's majorsymphony orchestras with such eminent conductors as Seiji Ozawa, Pierre Boulez,Alexander Schneider, Daniel Barenboim, George Szell, Eugene Ormandy, ClaudioAbbado, Simon Rattle, James Levine, Herbert Blomstedt, Rafael Frühbeck deBurgos and George Cleve. A dedicated chamber musician, Mr. Serkin hascollaborated with Alexander Schneider, Pamela Frank, Yo-Yo Ma, the Budapest,Guarneri, Orion and Shanghai String Quartets and TASHI, of which he was afounding member.  He has recentlyperformed a duo-piano team with Julia Hsu. They are devoting themselves to both one-piano, four-hands, as well asto two-piano music. 

An avid exponent of the music of many of the 20th and21st century's most important composers, Mr. Serkin has been instrumental inbringing to life the music of Schoenberg, Webern, Berg, Stravinsky, Wolpe,Messiaen, Takemitsu, Henze, Berio, Wuorinen, Goehr, Knussen and Lieberson andothers to audiences around the world. He has performed many important worldpremieres of works written specifically for him, in particular by ToruTakemitsu, Hans Werner Henze, Luciano Berio, Leon Kirchner, Alexander Goehr,Oliver Knussen, Charles Wuorinen and Peter Lieberson.  Mr. Serkin has recently made severalarrangements of four-hands music by Mozart, Schumann and his grandfather, AdolfBusch, for various chamber ensembles and for full orchestra.  He has also arranged all of Brahms’s organChorale-Preludes, transcribed for one piano, four-hands.

The 2015 summer seasonfeatured engagements at the Tanglewood, Ravinia and La Jolla Chamber MusicFestivals in performances of concertos, chamber music, and duo piano programswith pianist Julia Hsu.  He travels toJapan to perform with the Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra and the Osaka Symphonyand will give recitals in Tokyo and Shizuoka. Mr. Serkin appears with David Robertson and the Sydney SymphonyOrchestra in China following an Australian tour last season.  Within the United States he is soloist withthe orchestras of Atlanta, San Antonio and the Traverse Symphony and willperform the Reger Concerto in Carnegie Hall with the American SymphonyOrchestra in celebration of the centenary of the composer’s death.  European tours bring him to Cologne andHomburg in recital with programs of Josquin, John Bull, Dowland, Byrd, Nielsen,Mozart, Max Reger and Beethoven, as well as the Reger Piano Concerto with theLeipzig Gewandhaus and Dresden Staatskapelle orchestras conducted by HerbertBlomstedt.

Orchestral highlights ofrecent seasons have included the Boston, Chicago and Saint Louis Symphonies,New York Philharmonic and Scottish Chamber Orchestra, while recital tours havetaken Mr. Serkin to Philadelphia, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Santa Monica, Princetonand New York’s 92nd Street Y.  Recent summer festivalappearances have included BBC London Proms, Tanglewood, Aldeburgh, Chautauquaand Denmark’s Oremandsgaard Festival.  

Mr. Serkin currently teaches at Bard CollegeConservatory of Music.

JuliaHsu

Originally from Taiwan,Julia Hsu went to study at The Purcell School for young musicians in England atthe age of 14 with Professor Patsy Toh, wife of renowned pianist Fou Ts’ong.She continued her studies at the Royal Academy of Music, London, where shecompleted her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. In 2006, she studied at theSibelius Academy, Finland as an exchange student, where she benefited greatlyfrom the guidance of Professor Matti Raekallio, whom she later studied with atthe Hannover Hochschule für Musik und Theatre, Germany; in the highlysought-after “Soloklasse” program in 2008-10. Her interests in chamber musicand song accompaniment led her back to the Royal Academy of Music, London,where she completed her second Master’s in Piano Accompaniment in 2010.

In 2013, Julia was appointed Musician-in-Residence in Yilan’sWaldorf School, Taiwan, where she interacted with students and fellowcolleagues through regular lecture recitals and chamber music projects. Julia hasbeen a summer Festival Fellow in the Bowdoin Music Festival and a scholar atthe Banff Arts Centre. She was a Graduate Collaborative Piano Fellow at theBard College Conservatory of Music for two years beginning in September 2013.
